THE ANSWER IS YES! YES! YES!

We all know that cat’s are very different than dogs, but did you know their skin, hair and coat is too? Their skin is much thinner and therefore it is more negatively affected by tangles and matting. Matting can get so tight and close to their skin that it can make it difficult for them to rest or lie down in certain positions. Large mats can cause a lot of pain. They also can pull the skin up into the matted, tangled hair making it very difficult to shave off. Don’t ever use scissors on cats to remove mats. It is near impossible to differentiate the matted hair from the skin.

Cat Grooming Littleton Denver COMatted fur can cause irritation, this irritation can potentially cause a cat to over groom themselves. Over grooming will cause a large amount of hair entering the stomach and intestines, causing excessive hair balls and even blockages in the intestines.

The hair can also become so tight that it actually pulls off from the skin. Below is a picture of one of our clients cats being shaved. He had very heavy matting around his sides and armpits. If you look closely, you can see a bald spot right above the shave line that is from hair being pulled from the skin before we shaved the hair off.

To be honest, they are also more dangerous to groom than dogs since they have 5 potential weapons. (4 feet with claws and their teeth.) Being bitten by a cat can earn a person a trip to the hospital due to their highly infectious mouths and long, sharp teeth.

Cats are more sensitive than dogs, both emotionally and physically. Trying to “make” a cat feel secure can be quite the challenge since trying to “make” a cat do anything can be quite difficult. Our groomers enjoy grooming cats and understand that we have to move efficiently but slowly when shaving cats with mats. Switching out blades often is essential to prevent them from getting hot and giving your pet “clipper burn”. Often only a “dry bath” is necessary after the shave since cats are generally pretty clean.

Does My Cat Need To Be Groomed? If they have flaky, dry or excessively oily skin, you may want us to look at them.  If you can’t get a metal comb through their coat is another reason to seek out a professional groomer.  Some breeds such as Persians have such fine hair that combing out matts is nearly impossible. We are always happy to take a look at your kitty and give you recommendations.

How Can I Prevent My Cat From Getting Mats? Teach them at an early age to love being brushed and using a metal comb to catch small tangles that will turn into bigger matts.  Give them treats they love, don’t use too much pressure when brushing due to their high sensitivity and thin skin.  A Furminator de-shedding tool works great on short-haired cats to remove shedding hair.

Some just need a good bath and de-shedding treatment.  We will try to schedule your kitty during the week in the morning when we can get him/her finished as quick as possible and we have less dogs in our Pet Spa.  We also recommend you bring a crate or kennel so we can put them in the kennel and keep them up front at our counter and away from barking dogs.
